Wall4GRiD

Wall4GRiD is an initiative that aims to bring together projects and stakeholders from the energy sector around the current and future challenges facing the grid in Wallonia. With a view to optimising the actions proposed by different entities to strengthen and adapt electricity distribution networks and ensure the energy transition in Wallonia, Wall4GRiD creates a framework for exchange and collaboration to develop solutions more effectively.
Wall4GRiD is a facilitating channel for academic and industrial stakeholders in implementing a strategy to guarantee the technical feasibility of the grid transition – the principal channels through which Wallonia’s climate and environmental objectives will be achieved.

Wall4GRiD – An Initiative to Support the Adaptation of Networks
The energy transition is bringing about a profound transformation of electricity networks, which is essential to accompany the rise of renewable energies, the electrification of uses and the evolution of infrastructure. Faced with these changes, networks must become more flexible, intelligent and resilient in order to ensure efficient and secure energy distribution.
In Wallonia, this evolution represents a major challenge for distribution network operators (DNOs), who are confronted with growing technical constraints. The increase in decentralised production units, particularly photovoltaic, is placing significant pressure on a network that was historically designed for a unidirectional energy flow.
Furthermore, the growing electrification of the mobility, heating and industrial sectors requires rapid and efficient adaptation of infrastructure.

4 pillars
Wall4GRiD’s activities are based on four pillars: innovation, ecosystems, support and internationalisation.
Innov4GRiD
Coordinating and facilitating innovation among Walloon stakeholders (Universities, Research Centres, Industries and SMEs) and seeking available support, in order to strengthen their capacity to respond effectively to the challenges facing network operators in the medium and long term.
Ecosyst4GRiD
Facilitating and promoting an ecosystem-based approach among research, development and innovation (R&D&I) stakeholders, as well as investors, in order to create synergies between initiatives.
Support4GRiD
Supporting strategic decisions by partnering with delegated bodies (Wallonie Entreprendre, public investment funds, development agencies, …) in order to provide them with a vision that best reflects the realities on the ground. Supporting Walloon providers of the most relevant and urgent solutions for the networks.
Export4GRiD
Stimulating and facilitating interregional and international partnerships with stakeholders offering complementary solutions that we lack. Supporting and structuring the offering of Walloon services and expertise beyond our borders.
