Numerous initiatives and projects are currently emerging in Wallonia, mainly around the two “Ardent Cities”: Liège (the right side of the map) and Charleroi (the left side of the map). To structure, connect, and reinforce this dynamic ecosystem, we launched the Green Walloon Hydrogen Valley project: Green WaHyVe.
To stand out at the European level, it is essential to capitalize on these strengths. Wallonia benefits from a strategic geographical position and a highly developed transport and logistics infrastructure. Wallonia also has a strong industrial base, characterized by carbon‑intensive sectors for which emissions reduction remains particularly challenging, due to inherently high‑emission production processes such as glass, cement, lime, and steel. These positions naturally orients hydrogen deployment towards industrial applications and heavy-duty mobility. On a short term, Green WaHyVe is mainly focus on heavy duty mobility since this application is more mature and more adapted to launch the market. For the middle and long-term development of this new market, a larger view to develop the whole H2 ecosystem will be carried out.
In addition, Belgium is home to global leaders in hydrogen technologies, such as John Cockerill, internationally recognized for its advanced alkaline electrolyzers. The country also possesses strong expertise in education, innovation, research, and development, supported by high-level testing facilities, training centers, and academic institutions that accelerate technology maturation and workforce development.

All these strengths are illustrated on the map.
The heart of the hydrogen valley is anchored by the VALLHYEGE project, which already functions as a hydrogen valley in its own right. The project includes a 15 MW green hydrogen production unit (approximately 1,500 tonnes of H₂ per year) located in Liège (right side of the map), as well as an H₂ refueling station dedicated to heavy-duty mobility, serving around 15 trucks and one barge. In addition, the electrolyzer technology used is John Cockerill’s pressurized alkaline technology, and the manufacturing plant is located directly between the hydrogen production unit and the hydrogen refueling station.
Wallonia’s strategic location is highlighted by its proximity and connectivity to major European initiatives, including the hydrogen valleys FLHyPorts, Rhein-Ruhr, and LuxHyVal as well as pipeline projects such as HY4Link and mosaHYc. Moreover, Green WaHyVe and the three hydrogen valleys mentioned above are partners in the Interreg ValHyCon project, which fosters cross-border cooperation and strengthens the integration of hydrogen valleys across North-West Europe.
Wallonia’s expertise in training, innovation, research, and development is reflected in the dense network of
test infrastructures (BeBlue, CRM, RESA and BTD), training centers (Technifutur), and academic partners
(ULiège, UMons and UNamur) represented on the map.
By bringing together industrial actors, infrastructure projects, research institutions, and public stakeholders, Green WaHyVe establishes Wallonia as a key contributor to the European hydrogen transition. The project not only strengthens regional competitiveness but also enhances cross-border cooperation and can contribute to the emergence of the green hydrogen market in Europe
