Materials engineering, characterization, synthesis and recycling (4 MAT) - Recycling and environment - ULB
Based in the Ecole Polytechnique de Bruxelles, at the ULB, Service 4MAT works with inorganic materials throughout their entire life cycle, from synthesis to processing to optimal end-of-life management, and including optimization of their (micro)structures for a given application.

Skills, services and / or products
The Service 4MAT Recycling team provides expertise in the following fields:
Identification, characterization, and treatment of recoverable waste
Environmental assessment using the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of renewable energies and energy storage methods
Chemical and structural characterization of certain energy storage environments (several microscopy and chemical analysis techniques are available)
Selection of the most corrosion- and even wear-resistant materials, in relation to the specific constraints imposed by the energy storage environments
ReferencesThe SOLAUTARK project (Marshall Plan, 2009-2013) and SoTherCo project (FP7, 2013-2016):
Characterization of heat storage environments
Identification of recoverable components in end-of-life solar collectors
Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of solar heat production systems and long-term heat storage
Evaluation of corrosion
